Students in Mr. Leeman's 10th grade AVID class were set on their final grant decisions well before the news broke of a terrible fire at 

"Since our service area was teen drug addiction, getting to interview people who deal with that every day really helped show my group exactly what we were fundraising for. We have become much more aware of the teen substance use issues in our community and who is helping solve them."

, where they expressed confidence their $10,000 grant is needed now more than ever. We share the community's grief at such a terrible loss. 

This is truly where operating support shines. When nonprofits request operating support, they are asking for maximum trust because the funds can pay for anything. Program support, in contrast, comes with restrictions. Program support is a very compelling and valid funding option, and it is much easier for grantmakers to picture the number of hygiene kits or art supplies a grant might purchase. However, if Grant HS students had earmarked the funds for something specific, their grant may not have been able to be used at all, given 4D's long rebuilding process.

We commend the grantmakers for staying the course and being confident in their decisions, and we look forward to celebrating their hard work at our upcoming Grant Awards Ceremonies in May.
